IMAGEJeans measurement diagram — recommended 4:3
01

Waist

Controls the top opening and sets the foundation for rise, hip and seat fit. Waist measurement must account for wash shrinkage and stretch recovery.

02

Hip

Determines seat fit and top-block comfort. Hip measurement interacts with rise and waist to define the overall top-block proportion.

03

Front & Back Rise

Front rise affects crotch comfort; back rise affects seat coverage. Rise depth interacts with waist position (low, mid or high) to define the jean character.

04

Thigh

Measured at the crotch level; thigh width combined with rise and hip defines the upper-leg shape. Slim, relaxed and baggy directions start here.

05

Knee

Controls the mid-leg transition. Knee measurement combined with thigh and leg opening determines whether the silhouette reads as straight, tapered or flared.

06

Inseam & Outseam

Inseam controls leg length from crotch to hem; outseam includes rise and is affected by waistband construction. Both shorten through wash.

07

Leg Opening

The hem width that completes the silhouette. Leg opening combined with knee and thigh defines straight, tapered, wide or flared directions.

08

Jacket Chest / Length / Sleeve

For denim jackets and overshirts: chest width for layering, body length for proportion, sleeve length and armhole shape for movement and silhouette.

Pre-wash measurements are not final garment measurements. Different fabrics and wash directions require different shrinkage allowances.

Stretch denim must be confirmed for post-wash stretch recovery.

Jeans must be checked for leg twist and side-seam shift after wash.

Denim jackets must consider chest, armhole, sleeve width, body length and layering space.

Final measurements are confirmed through the approved sample and confirmed measurement chart.

Construction gives the wash a stable garment to work on.

Control bulk production through an approved visual standard.

01

Develop the Wash Sample

Develop the initial wash effect from the client's reference image, colour swatch, physical garment sample or target direction. Confirm the base garment, fabric, construction and hardware before wash application.

02

Review Colour, Hand Feel and Details

Check overall colour, local distressing, hand feel, measurements, artwork appearance, hardware condition and label compatibility against the reference target.

03

Confirm the Approved Standard

Use the client-confirmed sample, colour swatches, shade reference, measurement record and project documentation as the bulk production visual and technical standard.

04

Compare Bulk Production

Compare colour, surface, measurements and local effects against the confirmed standard during production. Adjust process parameters to maintain the approved visual range.

05

Shade Check and Grouping

Perform shade checks on bulk production pieces. Group garments within a close colour range when the process naturally produces variation across the batch.

06

Final Garment Inspection

Check measurements, shrinkage, skew, twisting, hardware, artwork, distressing, workmanship and packing condition. Compare against the approved standard and confirmed quality plan.

Washed garments may show natural piece-to-piece variation. Production control aims to keep colour, hand feel, measurements and surface effects within the approved range rather than make every garment visually identical.

Verify what changes during washing.

Shrinkage

What Is Checked Dimensional change in length, width and key measurement points after the full wash process.
Why It Matters Shrinkage affects size grading, fit consistency and customer expectation across the order.
When Confirmation Is Required Required when introducing a new fabric, wash process or garment construction.

Skew / Leg Twist

What Is Checked Fabric skew and leg or body twisting after wash, particularly on denim jeans and woven products.
Why It Matters Leg twist affects garment appearance and wearability; some twist is natural in denim; excessive twist is a defect.
When Confirmation Is Required Required for denim jeans and woven products; confirmed with each new fabric and wash combination.

Colourfastness

What Is Checked Colour resistance to washing, water, perspiration and light exposure.
Why It Matters Colourfastness affects garment appearance through consumer use and care.
When Confirmation Is Required Required according to market, order and client specification.

Crocking / Colour Transfer

What Is Checked Colour transfer from the garment surface to other materials through rubbing or contact.
Why It Matters Crocking affects consumer experience; raw and dark denim naturally crocks more than washed denim.
When Confirmation Is Required Required for dark, raw and heavily dyed garments; confirmed per project and market requirement.

Stretch Recovery

What Is Checked Fabric ability to return to its original dimensions after stretching, particularly after wash.
Why It Matters Stretch denim must maintain recovery through wash and wear; loss of recovery affects fit over time.
When Confirmation Is Required Required for stretch-denim products and any garment where elasticity is part of the fit.

Seam Puckering

What Is Checked Seam appearance after wash — thread shrinkage, fabric gathering along seam lines and overall seam flatness.
Why It Matters Puckering affects garment appearance; some puckering is expected in washed denim; excessive puckering looks uncontrolled.
When Confirmation Is Required Required when introducing a new fabric, thread or wash process.

Hardware After Wash

What Is Checked Button, rivet, zipper, plate and patch appearance, attachment and function after the full wash process.
Why It Matters Hardware surface may tarnish, corrode, discolour or loosen through wash; function must be maintained.
When Confirmation Is Required Required for every hardware component and finish; confirmed with the selected wash direction.

Artwork / Label Compatibility

What Is Checked Print, embroidery, woven label and heat-transfer appearance, adhesion and legibility after wash.
Why It Matters Artwork and labels must survive the wash process and remain legible and intact.
When Confirmation Is Required Required for every artwork, label and branding application; confirmed with the selected wash direction.

Testing items, standards, methods and acceptance criteria are confirmed per order, market, material and client requirement.

Client-specified third-party testing can be discussed and arranged per project. Testing agency, cost and timeline are confirmed per order.

EXPLORE OUR QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM

Before you send the denim or wash reference.

01What is your MOQ for custom denim and washed garments?

Typical projects start from around 100 pieces per style. MOQ is confirmed according to fabric, colour, wash effect, hardware, size range and construction complexity. More complex washes, multiple colour trials or specialised fabrics may influence the confirmed quantity.

02Can you develop from a reference image or physical sample?

Yes. KAOUYOU regularly develops denim and washed garments from reference images, physical samples, sketches, tech packs, colour swatches and wash references. The clearer the reference, the more accurately the sample can target the intended result.

03How long does denim or wash sampling take?

Sampling time is confirmed after the garment, denim, wash, distressing, hardware and revision requirements are reviewed. Complex washes, multiple colour trials, multi-process distressing or additional approval rounds may require more time. A project-specific timeline is provided after the development scope is confirmed.

04Which denim garments can KAOUYOU develop?

KAOUYOU develops jeans (straight, baggy, relaxed, tapered, carpenter), denim cargo pants, denim jackets, overshirts, denim shorts and project-specific denim garments. Fit, fabric, construction, wash and hardware are developed per project rather than selected from a fixed catalogue.

05Can you manufacture washed T-shirts and hoodies?

Yes. Washed T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, cargo pants, workwear and jackets can be developed with garment dye, vintage wash, mineral wash and project-specific surface effects. Different products react differently to wash — fabric, rib, artwork, labels and hardware are confirmed for compatibility per project.

06Can you develop raw or unwashed denim?

KAOUYOU has developed raw and unwashed denim projects. Shrinkage, colour transfer (crocking), wear evolution and care labelling must be considered during development. Raw denim behaves differently from washed denim and the wearer should understand the expected colour and fit changes over time.

07Can you evaluate selvedge denim projects?

Selvedge denim projects can be evaluated according to fabric sourcing, fabric width, quantity, construction and project requirements. Selvedge refers to the self-finished edge from shuttle-loom weaving and does not automatically represent higher quality. Narrower fabric width affects marker efficiency and material utilisation. Selvedge is not presented as a standard in-stock programme.

08Can every washed garment look exactly the same?

Washed garments may show natural piece-to-piece variation — this is inherent to wash processes. KAOUYOU controls production against an approved sample and confirmed shade range. The goal is to keep colour, hand feel, measurements and surface effects within the approved range rather than make every garment visually identical.

09How do you control shrinkage and leg twisting?

Shrinkage is managed through fabric selection, pre-wash measurement allowance and process control. Measurements are confirmed after the wash sample and bulk production is compared against the approved standard. Leg twist (skew) is checked after wash; some twist is natural in denim; excessive twist is addressed through fabric, construction or process adjustment.

10Can you add distressing, laser effects and repairs?

Yes. Whiskers, hand sanding, grinding, edge abrasion, frayed hems, rips, patches, repairs, laser fading and local contrast effects can be developed. Position, intensity and acceptable range are confirmed through sample approval. Distressing must not compromise unapproved structural strength. Random damage is not presented as a quality advantage.

11Can you customise buttons, rivets, zippers and patches?

Yes. Jeans buttons, rivets, zippers, metal plates, leather patches, Jacron patches, woven labels and back-pocket embroidery or stitch details can be customised. Custom hardware is subject to mould, MOQ, colour, finish and development time. Wash compatibility must be confirmed for every component through sample testing.

12Can third-party testing be arranged?

Yes. Shrinkage, colourfastness, composition, crocking, stretch recovery or other client-required testing can be discussed and arranged according to the project. Testing items, standards, agency, cost and timeline are confirmed per order. KAOUYOU does not publish or fabricate fixed test results and does not display unverified certification logos.
